How to Recover from Breast Surgery
Following your procedure, our surgeons at Suffolk Breast Practice will provide you with guidance on recovery after breast surgery. It is best that you follow your surgeon’s advice, as the recovery process will be suited to the individual and the procedure undertaken.
Our Tips on Recovery After Breast Surgery
Treatment and breast surgery recovery plans will vary according to your individual organism and the procedure. However, there are some general tips you can follow to help you with your recovery after breast surgery.
Follow your surgeon’s advice
Always follow the advice of the surgeon who operated on you. They should know your medical history and the benefits and risks of the procedure. Agree a treatment plan with your surgeon and follow it through, unless there are complications.
Inform your surgeon of any complications
If you develop new symptoms during your recovery process, such as increased pain or other complications, you should inform your surgeon as soon as possible. It is normal to have some pain when recovering from breast surgery, however some operations carry higher risks than others. To be safe, always speak with your surgeon and attend any follow-up appointments.
Refrain from strenuous exercise
No matter how physically active you were before breast surgery, you will need to refrain from any strenuous exercise to ensure a swift recovery. Exercise, such as heavy lifting, can increase complications during your recovery. Depending on the procedure, it usually takes a few weeks before you can return to your normal routine.
Get plenty of rest
Surgery can be stressful for your body; it will need time to recuperate. That is why you should get plenty of rest as you recover from breast surgery. Try sleeping on plumped up pillows and avoiding lying on your stomach. A mastectomy pillow can increase comfort.
Wear comfortable clothing
Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing and be careful when dressing yourself. Following surgery, your breast may be sensitive to touch. Try wearing a bra with an adjustable strap for ease of comfort. A loose-fitting top will be easier to put on and remove.
