What Are the Different Breast Implants Types and Shapes?
If you are considering implants in the near future, it’s important to understand the pros and cons of all breast implant types and shapes. This article will dispel implant myths and help you make an informed decision.
Types of Breast Implants
The two safest breast implant types are silicone and saline. Typically, there is not one safer or more recommended than the other. We will determine the correct type of breast implant by examining your body, health and requirements during your consultation.

Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are the most common type used in the UK. They are a synthetic material that has a more natural feel than saline implants and are less likely to wrinkle.
These implants have a silicone exterior and are filled with a silicone gel, making them suitable for a variety of shapes and sizes.
However, silicone breast implants can spread across your breasts and cause lumps. In addition, these implants are slightly firmer than saline and create a larger risk if they rupture.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are another common type used in the UK, used since the 1960s.
Their exterior is made of silicone and is fitted empty, where it is then filled with sterile salt water and filled with a saline gel.
While saline breast implants are more likely to fold, rupture or deflate over time, if they burst, the ingredients will be safely absorbed by the body. Compared to silicone, saline implant ruptures are more obvious and can be resolved sooner as a result.
Breast Implant Shapes
There are two main breast implant shapes: round and teardrop, also known as gummy bear breast implants. The choice is yours which shape you prefer, but one may suit your body more than the other.

Round Breast Implants
Round breast implants are the most common type. Both saline and silicone can be used for these implants, but saline is recommended.
These will create a circular breast implant shape and fuller appearance at the top of the breast. Those who suffer from sagging breasts and want to appear larger will benefit from these implants.
Teardrop/Gummy Bear Breast Implants
Teardrop breast implants are the second most common type, used since the mid-2000s. Gummy bear breast implants are less likely to burst or leak compared to rounder options. In addition, a textured silicone material is preferred for this breast implant shape to prevent shifting.
These offer a more natural look, similar to the typical breast shape. Instead of at the top of the breast, the fullness is concentrated at the bottom. Those who prefer a subtle appearance are suitable candidates for gummy bear breast implants.
