What to Expect at Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
Before you book or arrive for your breast augmentation consultation, you may have some reservations about the process or want to know how to prepare. In light of that, Suffolk Breast Practice have written this article to help ease your mind.
While we aim to answer some of your questions in this article, the consultation process exists to answer those specific, personal questions about your concerns and expected outcomes before determining the suitable options.

What to Expect at Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
It is extremely important we understand your medical history and expected outcomes. We understand it can be difficult to discuss such personal matters, but we encourage you to tell us as much detail as possible and ask questions before proceeding.
What You and Your Surgeon Will Discuss
During your breast augmentation consultation, your surgeon will discuss with you:
- What type of breast augmentation surgery you want
- Why you want breast augmentation surgery
- If you have had any previous surgeries
- Any breast symptoms
- If any of your family members have or had breast cancer
- If you have any medical conditions (including physical and mental health) or allergies
- If you are taking any current medications, vitamins, or supplements
- Your alcohol and drug use (including smoking)
- Your specific breast augmentation options and expected outcomes
- Potential complications during and after surgery
- Why breast augmentation surgery may not be the right option for you
What Your Surgeon Will Check
Your surgeon will complete mandatory checks to ensure you are in the best mental and physical state possible before proceeding with suitable options. These checks include:
- An evaluation of your general health and any medical conditions
- Evaluating potential risks due to your health
- A measurement and exam of your breasts (including size, shape, nipple placement, skin quality, colour, and breast symptoms)
After this, your surgeon will complete clinical photography, which may be used for a before and after. This will visualise your expected outcomes before having the breast augmentation surgery.

What Questions You May Prepare
Your breast augmentation consultation is all about you—you may choose to take notes or show photos of your ideal figure to your surgeon, but we also encourage you to research questions other patients have asked about breast augmentation surgery, including:
- Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?
- What are my options for breast augmentation surgery?
- What training do you have and how long for?
- What do you specialise in?
- How long have you been a surgeon for?
- How many breast augmentation surgeries have you performed, how often, and what is the success rate?
- Can I see before and after photos of previous patients?
- Where will the surgery be performed and what technique will be used?
- What are the risks or complications of the surgery?
- How long will the surgery take?
- How long will the results last for?
- Will pregnancy affect the results?
- How can I prepare for the surgery?
- What should I expect during recovery and how long will it take?
- What will help my recovery?
- What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the results?
- How are risks, complications, and complaints handled?
- How much does everything cost and what is included in the price?
- What happens after this consultation?
You may not need to ask some of these questions until your follow-up appointments and some may not be relevant to you. However, you should check with your surgeon for full clarification, even if you don’t think they are important or the information is online.
What Happens Next?
We will give you a leaflet discussing your chosen procedure where you can make an informed decision. After your initial consultation, if you and your surgeon believe a breast augmentation is right for you and you would like to continue, we will schedule a follow-up appointment.
