The Risks and Benefits of Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation also known as breast enlargement is among the three most popular procedures for women in the UK. Breast augmentation can have a variety of benefits; at Suffolk Breast Practice, we endeavour to provide you with accurate information and advice to ensure you receive the highest standard of service. We understand that going for surgery can cause feelings of anxiety, which is why we offer a non-judgemental and impartial service that is sensitive to your needs.
There are several benefits of breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation is for women who would like to increase the size of their breasts. If your breasts are uneven, drooping, or you are simply unhappy with their size, breast augmentation can help enhance their physical appearance by increasing volume and fullness.
Breasts can droop due to various reasons, such as age or pregnancy; breast augmentation surgery can help by restoring shape to your breasts. It is also suitable for increasing the size of breasts that are naturally small. Aside from enlargement, breast augmentation surgery can improve the firmness and symmetry of your breasts. Naturally, this can help improve self-confidence concerning your physical appearance.
Alternatively, you may find that having breast lift surgery is the better option for you. Breast lifts do not include implants and typically benefit women with smaller breasts that sag. It is possible to have breast augmentation surgery along with a breast lift. If you wish to learn more about breast lift surgery, please visit our blog.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
The breast augmentation procedure involves the insertion of implants behind your breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. The size of the implant will be agreed upon prior to surgery by a physical examination, taking into account your desires along with the available skin with which to work.
You will be placed under general anaesthetic during the operation; it usually takes around one-and-a-half hours to complete. Wounds caused by incision will be amended using stitches. Following the surgery, your breasts may feel sore and tender to touch. Swelling and scarring are also likely, although these should decrease over a period of weeks and months. You will not see the intended results immediately; your implants will begin to descend into a more natural position after about four weeks.
As with any operation, there are risks involved; these will be discussed during the initial consultation. Your breasts may swell following the surgery due to bleeding around the implant or you may experience an infection of the breast. You may also experience a loss of sensation in your nipples; a consultation is advised to determine the cause of any complications following surgery. Medication can also be prescribed to ease any discomfort you may be experiencing.
In the days and weeks following your operation, we recommend you wear comfortable clothing, such as a support bra, to help the recovery process. We advise against driving home from your operation due to the effects of the general anaesthetic. Only begin to drive when you feel comfortable enough to do so. It is also recommended that you do not engage in any strenuous physical activity, such as heavy lifting, in the weeks following your surgery. You may return to work after the first week of surgery, although this will depend on your recovery process.
