How to Choose the Best Breast Implants

You may be considering breast implants but are unsure of what they are. You may also be unaware of the different types of implants available. Choosing the best breast implant for you is important. We at Suffolk & Essex Breast Practice answer some of the most commonly asked questions about breast implants, from what they are, how long they last, and the difference between saline and silicone.
A Breast implant is a prosthesis inserted during breast augmentation surgery. Breast implants are used to enlarge the breasts and can help improve your breasts’ symmetry, volume, and fullness. Breast implants are suitable for women who have breasts that are uneven, drooping, or who are simply unhappy with their size. There are two main types of breast implants, saline and silicone, which are outlined below.

If you desire cosmetic breast surgery without the use of implants, a breast lift is the better option. For more information on breast augmentation surgery, click here

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
Unfortunately, breast implants do not last a full lifetime. The insertion of new implants is usually required to ensure long-lasting results. Complications can arise, in which case replacement breast implants will be needed. Breast implants typically last at least 10 years before the need for replacements. You should take good care of your breast implants following surgery.

Your breasts will feel different after having implants. It is advised that you attend regular check-ups to ensure your breast implants remain safe and functional.

Saline Versus Silicone Implants
When choosing the best breast implant, you may have come across these two terms: saline and silicone. The best type to suit you will depend on several factors. Both saline and silicone implants have a silicone shell, but saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. They are typically smaller in size and firmer when compared to silicone implants.

Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel prior to insertion. They are more expensive than saline implants due to their increased manufacturing costs. Silicone implants are considered to be the most ‘natural-looking’ when compared to saline implants.

They are also described as feeling the closest to normal breasts. However, silicone implants pose a higher risk of breast pain and other symptoms should they leak. If a saline implant leaks, the water will be absorbed into the body and should not cause any pain.
